Open Enrollment Courses:
Mexico Service and Adventure -
Summit Adventure is going to Monterrey, Mexico.
Just like in Summit's traditional wilderness courses, Summit's Mexico
Service and Adventure Course will test your physical limits, clarify
your faith, and encourage you towards active compassion. During
the nine days you will serve alongside a Mexican pastor in an impoverished
community near Monterrey, hike to the summit of a mountain with
a stunning view of this city of five million people, and rock climb
on the world-famous limestone cliffs of El Potrero Chico. Towards
the end of the course you may have the opportunity to practice your
technical abilities and leadership skills by bringing kids from
the community to El Potrero for a day of rock climbing.
Throughout the course you will be encouraged to consider the connections
between the physical challenges of rock climbing and the interpersonal
and spiritual dynamics of cross-cultural service. No prior rock
climbing experience is required. More experienced climbers may have
the chance to practice leading sport climbs.
Immersion Service and Adventure Semester -
The ISAS incorporates outdoor adventure and service-learning
across cultures both locally and internationally, community living,
leadership, and spiritual formation into an authentic experience
of learning in the Sierra Nevada of Central California and the Andes
of Quito, Ecuador. Students from any College or University may receive
up to 17 credits through Montreat College that can be transferred
back to their school.
Ecuador Service and Mountaineering- This
course is for participants who are interested in exploring the high
altitude mountains around Quito, Ecuador (no experience necessary,
only a bit of physical preparation), as well as, interacting and
ministering with the people and culture of that country. Participants
will join local organizations to help out in service and building
relationships with Ecuadorians. The combination of personal and
group challenge on the mountains is a good companion to the challenges
of facing poverty and cross-cultural issues.
Wilderness Instructor- This
12 day course is a much more technical and strenuous course and
is designed to train our instructors. It is open to participants
who have interest in becoming either a Summit Instructor or who
are interested in learning the technical, leadership, and facilitation
skills needed to lead groups into the backcountry and facilitate
their learning and growth through that experience. Participants
will experience their own challenges and learning, as well as, learn
rock climbing set-ups, rock and snow mountaineering and travel,
risk management, small group facilitation, navigation, ministry
and leadership skills, and experiential education teaching skills.
Adventure Leadership - This
7 day course is not as technical or strenuous as the Instructor
course but a bit more technical and strenuous than other open enrollment
courses. This course is for participants who are interested in learning
adventure ministry leadership, group facilitation, technical outdoor
leadership, and experiential education for use in their own church,
school, or organization. This may be used as a pre-requisite to
the Wilderness Instructor Course.
